How to Water Plants in a Cache Pot
Watering plants in a cache pot requires a slightly different approach than watering plants in a pot with drainage holes. Here’s a our favorite ways in a step-by-step guide to help you water your plants in cover pots:
Deep Watering
When your plant is ready for a drink you will want to give it a nice deep watering. This involves watering the plant as usual but letting the nursery pot sit in a small amount of water- just enough to cover the bottom of the pot. This allows the soil to absorb water from the bottom up, ensuring that the entire root system is hydrated.
Beginners Tip: After about 20 mins you can lift the nursery pot and dump out any remaining water. After you become a cache pot pro this will become second nature and you won't even have to check anymore.
Pro Tip: Clear nursery pots are a charm as you can see the soil and if there are dry spots or problems with your roots.
For smaller and beginner plant collections you can follow the routine below to ensure your plants are thriving while you learn their care needs.
1. Remove the Nursery Pot
Carefully lift the nursery pot (the one that actually holds the plant) out of the cache pot. This prevents water from accumulating at the bottom of the cache pot, which can lead to root rot.
2. Water the Plant Thoroughly
Take the nursery pot to a sink or another area where you can water freely. Slowly water the plant until you see water starting to flow out from the bottom of the nursery pot. This ensures that all of the soil is evenly moistened and the roots are thoroughly hydrated.
3. Let the Pot Drain Completely
Allow the nursery pot to sit in the sink or on a draining rack for several minutes to ensure that excess water drains away completely. This step is crucial to prevent water from pooling in the cache pot.
4. Check for Excess Water
Before placing the nursery pot back into the cache pot, check that the pot is no longer dripping. If necessary, pat the bottom of the pot with a towel to remove any remaining excess water.
5. Replace the Nursery Pot in the Cache Pot
Once the nursery pot has stopped draining, place it back into the cache pot. The cache pot will now protect your surfaces from any residual moisture, and your plant will benefit from the slight humidity that can build up inside.
6. Monitor the Soil Moisture
